Jamie and Mark

Lucea, Jamaica

Lucea is the capital of Hanover province, at the northwestern tip of Jamaica. The town lies on a horseshoe-shaped bay and is so picturesque that it has several times been used as a movie location. Lucea is a small town with only a few tourist attractions, but is an ideal choice for an idyllic sun, sea and sand vacation, and the larger towns of Montego Bay and Negril are a short drive away.

Beaches and Water Sports

Lucea is picture-perfect: exactly what people imagine when they think about a tropical paradise, with white sandy beaches and clear turquoise waters. Even better, the beaches are uncrowded and peaceful. Water sports available in the bay include swimming, sailing, windsurfing and kayaking, and it also is a great location for snorkeling and scuba diving. Hotels offer additional beach and water sports, such as beach volleyball, fishing and pedal boats.

Sightseeing

The Old Lucea Courthouse is one of the town's major landmarks, topped with a functioning clock tower that was really made for the island of St. Lucia but sent here by mistake. Fort Charlotte, on a peninsula beside the harbor, was constructed in the 18th century to repel French raiders, but its guns were never fired. The building is well-preserved, with a few remaining cannons, and the old artillery store is intact. Next door is the old barracks, a red-brick, Georgian-style building now used as a school. Lucea Parish Church is one of Jamaica's oldest churches, built in the early 1700s, and reputedly has a secret tunnel that leads to Fort Charlotte. Other than these historic sites, Lucea's main attractions are its three waterfalls: Kempshot Falls, Paradise and Dry Hill.

Hanover Museum

The Hanover Museum (instituteofjamaica.org) reopened in March 2011 following refurbishment. The museum is housed in the old slave prison and contains artifacts, displays and exhibits relating to the town's history as a major sugar exporter and banana port. Remains of an old workhouse, which was declared a Jamaican heritage site in 1992, are incorporated into the site.

Market

Each Saturday, Lucea comes alive as the locals set up market stalls in the town streets. The colorful booths sell everything from fresh produce and seafood to jewelry and handicrafts.

Nightlife

Lucea's nightlife is very low-key, with just a few casual bars, a handful of restaurants and occasional beach barbecues. Reggae music is an important part of local culture. For something a little more lively, the all-inclusive Grand Palladium Jamaica Resort and Spa (fiestahotelgroup.com) offers a casino, live entertainment and the Boogie Woogie nightclub.

Excursions

The bustling tourist towns of Montego Bay and Negril are each a 20-minute drive from Lucea. Dunn's River Falls, at Ocho Rios, is one of Jamaica's best-known natural attractions. The site offers a cafeteria, viewing decks and a craft park, all surrounded by tropical vegetation. Visitors can bathe in the pool at the foot of the falls and intrepid guests can even climb the waterfall in a human chain. Black River is another eco-attraction, offering a tour through rain forest scenery with hundreds of tropical birds, crocodiles, mangroves and quaint coastal villages.
